Kreate is building a new landmark in Jyväskylä – construction of the Taulumäki water tower to begin this spring
A new, striking water tower is being built in Taulumäki, Jyväskylä, with construction being carried out by Kreate, a company specializing in complex infrastructure projects. Alva-yhtiöt Oy and Kreate Oy have signed a contract worth over 26 million euros for the turnkey construction of the Taulumäki water tower. Kreate’s extensive experience with large-scale projects and highly complex concrete structures provides a solid foundation for successful implementation. Kreate is adding the contract to its second-quarter order book.
The new Taulumäki water tower will replace the Harju water tower, which has reached the end of its service life, and ensure water supply to downtown Jyväskylä for decades to come. The tower’s 7,000-cubic-meter tank is more than twice as large as the one in the current Harju water tower.
“Nowadays, water towers are rarely built in Finland, and projects of this size even less so. The Taulumäki water tower is an exceptional project in terms of both its size and its architecture. It’s wonderful that we’re able to bring this new landmark to Jyväskylä,” says Timo Vikström, CEO of Kreate Group.
The client for the project is Alva-yhtiöt Oy, which is responsible for water supply and sewerage services in the Jyväskylä area.
“The water supply system in Jyväskylä operates reliably, but the city’s growth and shifting patterns of water consumption require new infrastructure. The Taulumäki water tower is a key project that will strengthen the city’s security of supply and improve its ability to prepare for disruptions well into the future,” says Toni Hemminki, Director of Networks and Asset Management at Alva-yhtiöt Oy.
Building a water tower that blends beautifully into the surroundings requires careful execution
The sculptural tower is based on the Albedo proposal designed by Sweco Finland Oy, which won the design competition organized by the City of Jyväskylä and the Alva companies. The water tower’s three-dimensionally shaped steel facade and interior lighting make the tower appear different at various times of the day.
“This is a technically challenging project in which the base of the tank will be built at a height of 30 meters, and the top will reach 50 meters. We’ll start construction by pouring the foundation slab. Next, we’ll build the tower’s cylindrical frame, which rises all the way to the top. Finally, we will construct the tank structure and its supports,” says Tomi Pyökeri, Site Manager at Kreate, outlining the main stages of construction.
The project combines massive concrete structures, building services, mechanical systems, facade work, and the finishing of outdoor areas.
Kreate will begin construction in the spring of 2026, and the water tower is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028. The new water tower will be in a prominent spot on Taulumäki, on the ridge between the Rajakatu campus and Tuomiojärvi, and will be a significant feature of Jyväskylä’s cityscape.
