Kreate won the Junatie metro bridge project tender – investment in development ideas was reflected in quality points
At its meeting on October 3, the Helsinki City Transport’s board decided to select infrastructure builder Kreate to build the Junatie metro bridge in Helsinki. Kreate, which has distinguished itself in the construction of technically demanding bridge projects, focused its bid on presenting functional solutions, which was rewarded with excellent quality scores. In the procurement process, the contract value was estimated at €50–70 million. The final amount will be determined during the development phase based on the construction solutions selected.
The Junatie metro bridge project involves demolishing the metro bridge between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen and building a new one in its place. The project is scheduled for 2026–2027 and will begin with a development phase, during which Kreate will work with the rest of the project team to plan the implementation of the work in more detail. The aim is to minimize the duration of traffic disruptions and ensure smooth and safe movement of people during construction.
“The Junatie metro bridge is a demanding project that is made for Kreate. It is in the middle of busy traffic and is one of the busiest sections of the metro in terms of passenger numbers. We strategically focus on these technically demanding projects, where we can best utilize our expertise for the benefit of society,” says Timo Vikström, CEO of Kreate Group.
Kreate has outlined in its strategy that it will grow its business in the railway environment, which is already evident in the increase in joint projects utilizing different types of construction in the company’s order book. The Junatie metro bridge is precisely the kind of versatile and demanding construction in a railway environment that Kreate emphasises in its strategy.
Good quality points led to a clear victory
During the bidding phase, Kreate focused particularly on brainstorming development proposals, also drawing up a description of the tasks involved in the development phase and the project’s cooperation procedures. All of these were part of the quality offer, which earned Kreate excellent points in the bid comparison.
“We worked hard to develop good solution proposals for the client’s general plan and described how the development phase would be carried out. You could even say that we took pleasure in the challenge, as we considered ideas from many different angles to find cost-effective and innovative solutions,” says Antti Kokkonen, head of Kreate’s bridge unit.
Kreate has noticed that the more challenging the project, the more enthusiastic professionals are about developing ideas that leverage the strong technical expertise and experience of the staff to find the best solutions.
The agreement for the development phase of the Junatie metro bridge will be signed once the procurement decision becomes legally valid. The implementation phase is expected to begin in late spring 2026, once the project plan developed during the development phase has been approved by the Helsinki City Council.
In its procurement process, the Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd has estimated the value of the contract at EUR 50–70 million, which will be specified in more detail during the development phase as construction solutions are selected. Kreate will record the project in its order book once the implementation phase begins.
