The construction project taken on by our foundation and engineering construction specialists includes an embankment constructed between wharfs 1 and 4 that rises 2.10 metres above sea level and extends to 520 metres in length as well as a collection system for rainwater that is built behind the embankment. The contract also includes improving the protection of steel structures as well as the lighting and making modifications in order to improve the launching of work boats from the port and their working conditions.
We planned the execution of the location in cooperation with the client and a design partner, taking into account the varying soil conditions in the area. Our strong expertise in the execution of demanding concrete structures and engineering structures in water can be seen in how, for example, we are using three types of structures for the embankment: A part of the wall will be cast in situ, another part consists of elements and a third part will be a combination of bored piles and sheet piles. The combination wall will be executed by KFS Finland Oy, Kreate’s joint venture that specialises in special foundation construction.
The purpose of the embankment is to prevent the products from a possible oil spill or pipe break from being carried into the sea, or from sea to land, and to manage the detrimental impacts of sea level changes and flooding. The embankment also allows for earlier detection and isolation of any possible leaks.
The location will be constructed on the terms of busy boat traffic, in collaboration with the port personnel. This ensures disturbance-free operation at Finland’s largest port in terms of tonnage that is located in the Kilpilahti industrial district, the largest concentration of chemistry industry activities in the Nordic countries. We are also considering the bird nesting period pursuant to the water permit and will not be performing pile driving that generates noise during this time, for example.
The client for the contract is Neste Oyj and the contract schedule is from 03/2023 to 06/2024.
