RAISING THE PASSENGER PLATFORMS AND IMPROVING THE EXTERIOR APPEARANCE OF THE PLATFORM AREA AS PART OF THE REARRANGEMENTS AT PIEKSÄMÄKI STATION

Kreate implemented the first phase of the Pieksämäki passenger rail yard modification project by renovating platforms 1 and 6 of the Pieksämäki station. In the contract commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the passenger platforms of the station, which is at one of Finland’s most significant railway exchanges, were made accessible and the platform area gained a new look.

Kreate’s foundations, bridge and railway construction experts worked at Pieksämäki station in a contract where we dismantled the outermost platforms, 1 and 6, over a distance of about 180 metres, after which we rebuilt them raised to meet the accessibility requirements of the European Commission’s PRM-YTE regulation. In addition to installing new platform elements, we replaced the stairs of platform 1 and the canopies and lighting of both platforms, improved guidance and added tactile markings to the passageways. In the contract, we also made individual changes to the track and to safety devices.

For the platform transformation contract, we obtained a synergy benefit from the extensive renovation of the station tunnel at Pieksämäki station that we executed at the same time. In addition to the comprehensive renovation of the tunnel under the train tracks, we also built 75-metre-long covered ramps and above-ground structures at both ends of the tunnel.

The customer for the platform raising contract is the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the contract time was from July 2023 to November 2023. The work complemented and continued the change and development works of the City of Pieksämäki in the station area.
