The Vantaa tram is the first ever express tramway to be built in Vantaa. The route is 19 kilometres long and runs from Mellunmäki metro station on the Helsinki side via Länsimäki and Hakunila to Tikkurila and from there via Aviapolis to the airport. The project is divided into two parts: the eastern part from Mellunmäki to Tikkurila and the western part from Tikkurila to the airport.

In the development phase, which started at the end of October 2024, a consortium formed by Kreate and GRK Finland will plan the construction of the eastern part of the Vantaa tram together with the City of Vantaa and the design partners AFRY, Sweco and WSP.

In addition to the tramway system, the eastern section between Tikkurila and Mellunmäki includes stops, lanes, cycle paths, pavements and underground infrastructure such as water supply lines and ground reinforcement. In addition, new bridges will be built in the eastern part, including over Ring III and Porvoonväylä. The new tram stops in the eastern part are Kuusikko, Lahdenväylä, Kaskela, Hakunila, Hepokuja, Vaarala, Kuussilta, Fazerila, Rajakylä and Länsimäki.

Construction is expected to start immediately after the development phase in spring 2025 and commercial traffic is expected to begin in 2019. The City of Vantaa will later make a separate decision on moving to the implementation phase of the project. In addition to the City of Vantaa, HSY, which is renewing the water supply system in connection with the infrastructure works, is also commissioning the tram alliance. In the eastern part of the alliance, in addition to the City of Vantaa and HSY, the contractor is also Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd.

The total value of the Vantaa line alliance procurement is approximately 660 million euros, of which the value of the eastern part is 217 million euros, and the construction phase of Kreate’s construction phase is approximately 105 million euros.
