THE GREAT JÄNNEVIRTA BRIDGE IMPROVES TRAFFIC FLOWS

The Jännevirta bridge, located on the border of Kuopio and Siilinjärvi, is one of the most demanding waterways-related engineering structures we have implemented. The spectacular bridge has a length of 577 metres and an underpass height of 24 metres.

The Jännevirta bridge is on Highway 9, on the municipal border between Kuopio and Siilinjärvi, It crosses the Saimaa deep water route at the Jännevirta village. Highway 9 is an important road between Joensuu and Kuopio, with a traffic volume of about 7,000 vehicles per day.

In the project, a new fixed bridge was built south of the old bridge across the strait. In addition to the bridge, we implemented alignment and levelling improvements for approximately 3 kilometres on both sides of the bridge. The project improved junctions to private roads and pedestrian and bicycle routes. It also modernised the road and street lighting. The new, wider carriageway and pedestrian and bicycle way ensure a safe crossing of the bridge. The fixed bridge, on the other hand, facilitates both road and water traffic.

The customer was the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the bridge was completed in November 2018.
