Our bridge specialists began work in March 2025 by constructing a temporary steel truss bridge for pedestrian use. As part of the project, the intermediate support of the old bridge will be repaired and the ground beneath it will be reinforced using jet grouting. In addition, we will build a striking new wooden deck for the bridge using glulam beams and larch.
What makes the Old Porvoo bridge project particularly special is that the stones from the existing natural stone abutments will be carefully dismantled, documented in detail, and reinstalled in their original positions as facing stones on the new concrete abutments – a process we will carry out in collaboration with the Finnish Heritage Agency. Furthermore, we will build new foundations for the riverside walls next to the bridge and restore their stonework.
In this project, carried out in the nationally significant cultural landscape of Porvoo, we are working in a relatively confined urban environment and partly over water, using a variety of construction techniques. These include drilled and driven piling, anchored retaining walls, jet grouting, steel structures, timber construction, and stone cladding. The piling, jet grouting, steel structures, timber construction, and stone cladding. The piling, jet grouting, and anchoring of the retaining walls will be carried out by professionals from KFS Finland, a joint venture of Kreate.
The client is the City of Porvoo, and the contract period runs from January 2025 to May 2026.
