Tampere passenger railway yard project
In this project, we are improving the functionality of the Tampere passenger railway yard for both passengers and trains. Once completed, the project will significantly transform the Tampere railway station area and improve the flow of train traffic throughout Finland. We repair demanding bridge structures and contribute to future development projects in the city of Tampere.
Kreate is renovating the Tampere passenger railway yard together with its alliance partner, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. Other parties involved in the project include the City of Tampere, VR-Yhtymä Oyj, and Fintraffic Raide Oy, under separate agreements. The total budget for this significant project is €232 million.
The railway station area is located in the heart of the city, connecting the eastern and western sides of Tampere. The sites included in the project are located along the main railway line at various points in the city centre. The project involves renovating the Ratapihankatu bridge crossing the Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass and four railway bridges, under which a modern and spacious passenger terminal will be built in connection with the station building. At the same time, the bicycle paths and sidewalks in the underpass will be renovated, and a bicycle parking facility, elevators, and escalators will be built in the platform areas.
To improve rail traffic capacity, extensive track work will be carried out at the passenger railway yard, a new third island platform with access routes will be built, and canopies will be installed at all platforms. The Erkkilä overpass will be renovated, and a carriage maintenance area will be built in Naistenlahti to provide more space for passenger trains in the railway yard in the future. A carriage maintenance area was built in Perkiö to be used during the construction of the railway yard.
Kreate’s bridge, railway, road, and foundation builders, as well as communications, design management, and virtual construction experts, are participating in this project, which encompasses a wide range of construction types.
The first phase of the project will be completed in 2026, and the entire project will be completed in early 2031.
