The Lauttasaari bridge was first completed in 1969, and it is in poor condition. The modernisation involves repairing and reinforcing the bridge structures and permanently closing the raising leaf. The steel structures of the bridge are reinforced by bolting steel plates on the bottom of the bridges at the supports. The new bridge will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists better, as it will include separate footpaths and one-way bicycle lanes. Furthermore, the southern footpath will be widened so that, at 4 m wide, it will also accommodate fishermen. After the modernisation project, the bridge will have three driving lanes: one from Lauttasaari to Helsinki city centre and two from the centre to Lauttasaari.
The repairs will be finished in November 2020, but the traffic restrictions due to the worksite will be removed in September 2020 when the top section of the bridge is scheduled to be completed. The value of the contract exceeds EUR 18.5 million. The customer is the City of Helsinki, and the execution schedule is from August 2019 to November 2020.
