In August 2023, Helsinki Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd signed a contract for the development phase of the alliance contract for the Koskela depot project with a group called Akseli. Kreate was a partner of Skanska, the group’s main contractor, in both the tendering and development phases, and the implementation phase contract signed in December 2024 will continue the cooperation.
As agreed on the contract, we will carry out the railway and electric track works, the turnout control system and the circular economy solutions for the projects. We are building a hefty 5 300 metres of railway tracks and 50 switches with structural layers from the pile slab upwards. In addition, we will purchase the necessary equipment for the depot, such as a wheel lift, a wheel measuring device and submersible trolley hoists for tram maintenance. The contract also includes the purchase and installation of telecommunications network equipment.
Kreate’s contribution to the electric track works in the depot contract is substantial. It includes the construction of a catenary system throughout the depot area, the implementation of a DC power supply system for the depot and line power supply, the supply and return cabling of track power and the implementation of a catenary control system.
The contract has ambitious environmental goals, and the use of Kreate’s skills in circular economy supports the client’s aim to help forward environmentally sustainable construction projects. In addition to the environmental targets set for circular economy in Kreate’s contract, the alliance contract has set objectives for carbon dioxide emissions, energy solutions and environmental certifications.
One of the areas working towards sustainable development is the use of recycled materials and recycling of demolition waste. Kreate’s circular economy package also includes the dismantling of the old Koskela depot. We make the best possible use of the demolition materials on the project, for example by crushing concrete on site and using it in structural layers, and by supplying steel for reuse.
The target cost of the alliance contract is 282,4 million euros. Kreate’s part of the contract is valued at 58 million euros.
The construction of the Koskela depot started in January 2025 with the demolition of the old depot building, and the construction phase on Kreate’s part will last until the end of 2028. The new depot is planned to be operational in 2029.
