Extensive renovation of the Touhula underpass on the railway line between Iisalmi and Kuopio

The Touhula bridge, which is the site of work for our railway professionals, is an underpass on the Savo railway line in the center of Iisalmi.

We are carrying out extensive renovation work on the dilapidated railway bridge, including the replacement of bearings, edge beams, and waterproofing, as well as the resurfacing of concrete surfaces. The project also includes modifications related to the electric railway, such as the construction of a new console in connection with the replacement of the edge beams. The Touhula underpass is approximately 100 meters long, but we are carrying out the necessary repairs over a total area of 350 meters.

We are working in challenging conditions at this site, as the bridge must remain in use for train traffic throughout the project, except for a brief interruption in rail traffic. In addition, the bridge is crossed by the busy Eteläinen Pohjolankatu street, which has over 10,000 vehicles per day, as well as pedestrians and cyclists. For example, the planning and implementation of extensive scaffolding and heavy lifting work requires special expertise. We will replace the bearings on a tight schedule during the rail traffic interruption at the turn of August and September.

At Kreate, we promote sustainable development by using as many recycled and reused materials as possible on our construction sites. At the Touhula underpass, this can be seen, for example, in the use of excavated soil whenever possible.

The client for the project is the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the project will be completed in October 2025.
