The contract involved building a new 1,200-metre track at the western edge of the Pasila station area. The work involved the substructures and superstructures for the new track, working on the electric railway, installing three new switches and dismantling two old switches. A temporary switch was installed for the construction of the new track and dismantled after the new track was commissioned.
After the commissioning of the new track, geometry changes, electric railway work and track joints were completed on 7 different tracks at both ends of the Pasila station, covering more than 1,500 metres in total.
Pasila Railway Station is the second busiest railway station in Finland, with more than a thousand trains passing through every weekday. During rush hour from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., more than 70 trains arrive and depart at the station. The functionality of the railway network in the area has a significant impact on railway traffic elsewhere in Finland. The railway project was completed as part of the Tripla Centre project in Pasila. The additional western track was the last additional track and platform that could be built in Pasila. After that, there is no more space for above-ground construction.
The additional track project provides two new tracks for long-distance trains as well as for commuter trains to Riihimäki and Lahti in both directions. This makes traffic smoother and allows for adding new departures. The railway traffic in Pasila impacts the rest of Finland. The improved punctuality of passenger trains will also reduce the disturbances to freight traffic. In addition, railway traffic is an eco-friendly and efficient means of public transportation.
The value of Kreate’s contract was approximately 4.4 million euros. The customer was the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the implementation time for the construction was from February 2019 to September 2021.
