At Helsinki Airport in Vantaa, our foundation and engineering construction unit renovated Air BP Finland’s refuelling area, which is owned by the international energy company British Petroleum. British Petroleum is one of the four largest oil producers in the world.
The multi-phase project included repairing old concrete fuel safety troughs and making new safety troughs as well as repairing and expanding the old concrete slabs in the area. We also implemented the ditches and wells of the new drainage system in the area.
We worked in conjunction with an operational aircraft refuelling station together with other operators, which required us to plan activities and schedules precisely. Our strong expertise on foundations and concrete was utilised in an international operating environment, where there were experts in various fields from countries such as Norway and Australia. The worksite was located on the so-called clean side of the airport, which is why all employees and materials went to the site through a security check, for example. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an additional challenge to the contract, where a particularly strict occupational safety level under Finnish conditions was already being observed, for example with regard to work with fire.
The circular economy was taken into account in our work in that the excavated soil in the area was temporarily stored and we aim to reuse it.
