FOUNDATION CONSTRUCTION OF THE KATAJANOKKA QUAY OFFICE AND HOTEL PROJECT IN HELSINKI

An office and hotel property built of wood will be built in a central location in Helsinki’s Katajanokka, with all its foundation and engineering construction work being carried out by Kreate. The design of the construction project called Katajanokan Laituri (Katajanokka Quay) is guided by the goal of minimising climate impacts during the building’s lifecycle. The wooden property will be owned by the occupational pension company Varma.

Kreate’s professionals in foundation and engineering construction carried out the project management contract in a very challenging environment, where retaining wall solutions for the trench demanded strong expertise. The execution of the project was helped by the fact that the contractor had been taken along in the construction planning work well in advance. For example, Kreate’s solid know-how was utilised in retaining wall and foundation solutions which were optimised to be more functional and cost-effective.

Located on the seafront and aiming for carbon neutrality, the building will function as the headquarters of Stora Enso headquarters and a hotel, among other things. The property, which will be built from solid wood elements, will also have offices for businesses and service providers as well as public spaces, such as cafés and restaurants, for the use of city residents and tourists.

The customer for the contract was Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company, and the project supervisor is Haahtela. Kreate’s share of the contract was completed at the end of 2023, and the estimated completion of Katajanokka Quay as a whole is in the spring of 2024.
