Bridges, roads and demanding foundation construction – the massive Mt 180 Kurkela–Kuusisto project is accelerating the development of the Kaarina and Turunmaa archipelago
Kreate is building a new growth corridor in Kaarina, which includes both bridges and road sections and meets the diverse infrastructure needs of the area. The nearly €80 million project commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Southwest Finland, improving road connections between Kaarina and the Turunmaa archipelago and enabling sustainable development in the region.
Kreate is implementing the Mt 180 Kurkela–Kuusisto project commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which involves building 3.5 kilometers of new road from the Kurkela interchange to the island of Kuusisto and upgrading Kurkelantie to a dual carriageway with four lanes over approximately 1.3 kilometers. The project also includes the construction and improvement of nine bridges, the most significant of which is the nearly 400-meter-long Auvaisberg bridge over Kuusistonsalmi.
The project is characterized by challenging ground conditions—soft soil at the Kaarina end and hard rock at the Kuusisto end—as well as pressurized groundwater, which require versatile expertise in foundation and special construction. The new connection will streamline traffic, increase safety, and enable the development of the urban structure and land use in the city of Kaarina. At the same time, the project supports business opportunities and the attractiveness of the entire region. The improvements will also benefit public transport and bicycle and pedestrian traffic, increasing the accessibility of the entire area. The other end of the new western bypass road in Kaarina will be built right next to the Kirjalansalmi bridge constructed by Kreate.
The Mt 180 Kurkela–Kuusisto project is a Design and Build (D&B) contract commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which includes a development phase. The development phase began in November 2025, and actual construction will start in spring 2026. The new route will be opened to traffic by the end of October 2027.
Kreate recorded the development phase portion of the project in its order book in the last quarter of 2025. The total contract value of €80 million is expected to be added to the order book during the first quarter of 2026.
