IN A DEMANDING JOB, WE STRENGTHENED THE T1–T2 INTERCONNECTION AT HELSINKI AIRPORT

Kreate carried out an infrastructure contract where our foundation and engineering construction professionals reinforced the frame structures of the corridor connecting the domestic and foreign terminals. The demandingness of the project is indicated by the fact that Kreate was the only operator in the field that had the skills to carry out the work under special conditions at Helsinki Airport.

Kreate acted as the project management contractor and project supervisor in the contract, where the reinforced concrete frame of the corridor between Terminals 1 and 2 of Helsinki Airport was strengthened and some relocation of building-technical systems was carried out. Strengthening the frame was a prerequisite for the new moving walkways of the corridor.

The contract included extensive foundation and concrete work, such as drilling piles for foundations, sheathing existing pillars and building new beams and pillars.

Helsinki Airport was an exceptional construction environment, and in all work phases of strengthening the gateway, a functional airport and terminal environment was taken into account, including the heavy 24/7 pedestrian traffic on the gateway. Challenges were also caused by working in very narrow floor ducts less than one metre high, as well as dismantling and building on different floors while taking into account the load-bearing capacity of the old concrete frame.

We promoted the circular economy by delivering the concrete material removed from the structures to Kreate’s circular economy unit to be crushed and reused on other construction sites.

The customer for the contract was Finavia Corporation, and the implementation time for Kreate’s part of the construction was from May 2021 to May 2022.
