Kreate’s foundation and concrete experts were involved in the project, where Sappi, the world’s leading producer of sustainable wood fibre products and solutions, invested in its Kirkniemi paper mill to enable the multi-fuel boiler completed in 2015 to switch to using biofuels instead of coal.
The investment means that reception, storage and processing equipment for biofuels (such as bark and forest chips, which are produced as a by-product of forest management and the wood processing industry) will be built at Kirkniemi in Lohja.
Kreate was responsible for the earthworks and concrete structure construction in the project. Our contract included earthworks; the concrete structures of the reception building and screening room; and a silo approximately 20 metres high. Challenges were brought by the retaining wall work and the foundation structure of the reception building, which was designed below the groundwater level.
The customer was Sappi Finland I Oy, and for Kreate’s portion, the contract time was from November 2021 to July 2022.
