WE ARE RENEWING THE KUIVAJOKI BRIDGE ON HIGHWAY 4 IN II

Kreate’s bridge project brings construction professionals along the busy Highway 4 to Kuivaniemi in Ii, where we are replacing a concrete bridge over the Kuivajoki River that has reached the end of its service life. The project commissioned by the Lapland ELY Centre will also improve the road areas around the bridge site.

The Kuivajoki Bridge project will start with Kreate building a bypass next to the existing bridge and a bypass bridge on the upstream side of the Kuivajoki River. The pedestrian walkway on the pile-based bypass bridge will be separated from the rest of the traffic by a handrail. Traffic on Highway 4 will be shifted to the temporary route in June 2025.

We will then dismantle the old bridge and build a continuous reinforced concrete bridge on the same site. The new waterway bridge will be founded on bored piles.

The new bridge is longer and considerably wider than its predecessor: it is 72,6 metres long and has a 19,5-metre effective width. In addition, there will be a 4 m wide pedestrian and bicycle path on one side of the bridge. The bridge has space for two additional lanes, so we will complete the new bridge with 4 lanes. However, the new lanes will not be introduced at this stage, but the additional lanes and the central reservation will be built separately at a later stage as a separate contract.

The Kreate bridge project also includes improvements to the roads around the bridge site.

The demolition concrete from the old bridge over the Kuivajoki River will be delivered for crushing and will thus be used by operators in the region.

The contract is awarded by the Lapland ELY Centre and the contract period is 3/2025-10/2026.
