Demanding repair work on the Hopeasalmentie bridge and metro tunnel on the main road in East Helsinki
Kreate is carrying out repair and reinforcement work commissioned by the City of Helsinki as part of the renovation of the Hopeasalmentie bridge and Hopeasalmi metro tunnel. The location adds to the difficulty of the project., as we are working on the extremely busy Itäväylä and on a metro line that is sensitive to disruptions. The low-emission construction site will be completed in September 2026.
Kreate acts as the main contractor in a demanding renovation project targeting the Hopeasalmentie bridge, which crosses Itäväylä, the main thoroughfare in East Helsinki, and the Hopeasalmi metro tunnel, which is part of Helsinki’s eastern metro line, located in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. At the same time, we are renovating the district heating line and renewing the surface structures of the streets.
In the project, we demolish the deck of the Hopeasalmentie bridge and build support structures for new bridge surface structures, waterproofing, edge beams, and railings. The underside of the bridge deck is coated throughout, and the lower parts of the front walls are chiselled and repaired by casting. During the repair and reinforcement of the bridge, we will also build bicycle lanes on both sides of the roadway crossing the bridge.
During the renovation of the Hopeasalmi metro tunnel, we will renovate the surface structure and superstructure, waterproofing, and the eastern edge beam, among other things. We will also work on the actual metro line, when we reinforce the rock inside the tunnel, repair the deck beams, and remove graffiti from under the deck during the metro service interruption in spring 2026. Kulosaaren puistotie presents its own challenges as traffic will continue to flow densely on top of the metro tunnel throughout the project.
At Kreate, we actively build sustainable infrastructure, and it is evident at this construction site. All demolition concrete from the site will be delivered to Kreate’s own circular economy area, where it is crushed into reusable concrete aggregate to replace virgin aggregate. The project will be implemented in accordance with the Carbon Neutral Helsinki 2030 emissions reduction program as a low-emission project, meaning that all the machinery and equipment used on site run on renewable fuel and comply with Euro 6 / STAGE IV standards.
The client is the City of Helsinki, and the contract period is 2–9/2026.
