We are renovating the Malminkartano station tunnel by combining our expertise in railway and rock engineering

Kreate is carrying out an extensive renovation of the station tunnel at Malminkartano train station in Helsinki, a project that presents significant technical and logistical challenges. Located on the Ring Rail Line, this nearly €9 million project is the most challenging of the three adjacent stations’ renovation projects. The project is significant not only for train passengers but also for us: this is the first project in which the Rail Unit and the Rock Construction Unit, established in early 2026, are combining their expertise.

We are renovating the Malminkartano train station in Helsinki, which was built inside a tunnel in the 1970s. The project includes the station tunnel and platform structures, extensive concrete repairs, and the electrical systems for the tunnel and platforms. At the same time, we are installing new water drainage and insulation systems in the station tunnel and rock cuts to prevent the formation of ice and improve the durability of the structures as well as passenger safety.

The project is the first joint venture between Kreate’s rail unit and its new rock construction unit. We are working on a challenging tunnel project where the plaza areas at both ends of the station tunnel, and the surrounding dense residential area make for a work environment that requires special arrangements. All logistics for the project, such as the transport of machinery, equipment, and the material to be dismantled, will mainly take place by rail.

Following a major renovation, Malminkartano station now serves Ring Rail Line passengers in a safer, more user-friendly, and more reliable manner than ever before. The renovation of the Malminkartano station tunnel is part of a broader station renovation project for the Ring Rail Line, with Malminkartano station being the most technically challenging of them all, as the entire tunnel is being renovated and its structures are being replaced both inside and out. At the same time, Kreate’s experts in challenging infrastructure projects are also carrying out a renovation of the adjacent Kannelmäki train station, with a focus on demanding track and bridge work.

The renovation project will be carried out in accordance with the Green Deal principles for zero-emission construction sites, and the project period is April–November 2026. The key construction phases, such as the demolition of the tunnel’s old lining, rock reinforcement, and the construction of the new lining, will be carried out during the rail service suspension from June 1 to August 9, 2026.

The client is Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd. We are recording the nearly €9 million contract in our first-quarter order book.
